Dave started playing trumpet at 12 years old in St. Paul, AB. After high school, he moved to Edmonton to attend Grant MacEwan as a Music Performance major. Dave studied trumpet under Bill Dimmer, and jazz under local legends Rick Garn, Bob Stroupe, and Bobby Cairns. Dave got his first taste of performing live with the Latin band Orquestra Energia in 1991, but felt that he needed more education, and ventured to Antigonish, NS to take his B.Mus Jazz Performance at St. Francis Xavier University. There, he studied under Robby Smith, Rod Elias, Gene Smith and others.

After completing his studies, Dave came back to Edmonton and went on to perform with the likes of Jim Head, Ron Samsom, Charlie Austin , Wayne Feschuk, Bob Tildesley, Chris Andrew, Jerrold Dubyk, and Latin big bands such as America Rosa, Tilo Paiz, Orchestra Energia, and Salsabor. Dave’s influences are many, including greats such as Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane, Kenny Wheeler, and Clifford Brown.
